Students participate in a 12-week series of weekly Saturday workshops that will expose them to open source tools in data science. The workshops will have four main focus areas including Excel, SQL, R, and Python.

BDPA Motto: “Advancing Careers From The Classroom To The Boardroom.”

2021 Program Objective:

Provide a relevant data science experience for 50 Black/African American college students through:

  • Technical workshops
  • Professional development seminars
  • Networking events
  • Participation in Datathon competition at Annual BDPA Conference

2021 Program Needs:

  • Presenters for technical workshops and professional development seminars
  • Partners to facilitate networking events
  • Sponsorships & donations
  • Cloud computing resources for workshops and annual competition

Outline for each workshop topic:

Excel:

Week one: Excel functions for data analysis
Week two: Data visualization
Week three: Power query

SQL:

Week one: Join types
Week two: Indexing
Week three: Aggregation

Python:

Week one: Data structures (vectors, matrices)
Week two: Data manipulation (pandas, numpy)
Week three: Basic modeling

R:

Week one: Data structures
Week two: Data manipulation (dplyr)
Week three: Modeling and Data viz (ggplot)
